~Chapter one: The beginning~
In a world with a red moon, the nights are always blood-ish red. The days, are like no other. Bright, sunny, full of people, just like the real world. The cars just pass around the warm streets of Palm Square. It’s a morning of summer. Suddenly, clouds start gathering in the sky. The dark clouds block the sun out, as tiny raindrops start cooling down the busy streets of Palm Square. The busy people had bags, usually from shopping all day. They suddenly ran to the sides of the shops, to get away from the rain that had begun falling. It was a very big city after all, buildings as tall as you can see. Very noisy with the honks of cars, chattering of people, children crying here and there. The usual.
From the entrance of one of the apartment buildings, a young man stepped out into the street. Wearing black pants, with a black plain sweater. He stood around 5’8”. He had headphones put on as he listened to some music. For some reason, he didn’t notice the rain. He just stood there, by the street, looking at the incoming cars with his dark brown eyes. Suddenly a girl covers the young man’s eyes.
: “Jeez Ark! You’re going to catch a cold!”
His name was Ark. And he knew not of the destiny that awaited him.
Ark: “..Milena…”
Ark turns around as he looked down to a girl. Around 5’5”, black long hair, very light complexion of skin. Wearing one of her… “pink cheery” outfits that consisted of a pink stripped skirt that went down to a bit bellow her knee. A pink vest and a white shirt underneath. And a bow on the side of her head. Quite cute. She’s also Ark’s childhood friend. Practically, one of his only friends.
Milena looks at ark with her deep hazel eyes, eyes that could look into a person’s soul.
Milena: “What? Don’t tell me you didn’t even notice it was raining?”
Ark: “…Leave me alone…”
She sighs
Milena: “Honestly, what am I going to do with you?”
She takes out an umbrella hands it over at Ark. It was pink, and it had flowers on it. It was extremely girly looking.
Ark: “…Excuse me?”
Milena: “Oh, don’t stand there looking stupid. We’re walking to school together under that. And you’re holding it!”
Ark: “I’m…what?! Sorry. No.”
Milena: “But…I’m shorter…and you’re the guy! It makes sense, doesn’t it?”
She brings out a bright smile. Her dimples on her cheeks always made Ark chuckle a bit.
Milena: “Pleeeeeeaaaaaseee?”
She says in a cute/teasing voice. Ark looks at her, and finally gives in. Ark is the type of person who plays it tough, but has a soft spot if someone can find it.
Ark sighs.
Ark: “…You win…”
She giggles.
Milena: “Hehe. In all the years we’ve known each other, I’ve always won, huh?”
Ark: “…Makes me wonder why I keep resisting.”
He takes the girly umbrella and opens it up. And so, they both start walking to school. Ark is a Junior, and so is Milena. Due to her brains, she was skipped a grade back in middle school, thus they ended up on the same grade.
In the rain, people on the sides of the street looked at Ark, giving him odd looks, some snickering, others couldn’t help but to laugh at how strange he looked holding something so girly. Ark didn’t really care. He never did care of what others thought of him whatsoever. And he was fine with that. However, he always had a problem. He hated society for what they were. Ark simply sighed at people’s reactions.
Milena: “Oh, don’t let ‘em get to you!”
Ark: “Whatever. It stopped bothering me ages ago.”
Milena: “I know that…but…”
Ark then starts walking faster; cutting her off in the middle of the sentence. The raindrops made thudding noises on the pink umbrella as they dripped onto the ground. Ark just wanted to drop the subject. Why bother? It’s always been like that for him. Step by step, the whole walk was filled with both silence and noise at once. Between the two, there was nothing but awkward silence. Around there, there was the noise of the city. The noise of cars going back and forth, their honks, and some angry shouts of people. Same old, same old.
They finally arrived, with only five minutes before class. Like always, some students were off in their little groups. Ark and Milena were in different classes. They had parted ways at the entrance, not saying anything. Ark simply sighed as he stat down at the back of the class. Usually by the window. There, he would just slap on his headphones, and look out the window as the hours of class went by. He would somehow ace all of his tests, thus making sure he has enough to pass the class.
Later that day, Ark had fallen asleep on his desk. He never even heard the sound of the bell of the last class of the day, and no one had bothered to wake him up. He was alone, sleeping, the music still going on his headphones, the rain still falling outside.
Suddenly, the door opened. A guy came into the room, stood around 5’9”, barely an inch taller than Ark. Wearing causal blue jean pants, and a green dressing long-sleeved shirt, a casual yet elegant look. Long light brown hair that would goes down to his lower neck and brown eyes. He walked right up to Ark’s desk and looked at him sleeping. The guy simply sighed and shook his head. He slowly reached for Ark’s headphones and carefully took them out of his ears. He had to try hard not to snicker. He then took his right index finger…and flicked Ark’s ear.
Ark: “What the f--!!!…It’s you. God-friggin’-dammit Elijah. You always do this!”
Ark yelled out in annoyance at his friend, Elijah. Someone he has known since he began Highschool.
Elijah: “Well! If you stopped falling ASLEEP in class. You wouldn’t have to go through with it, now would you?”
Ark glared at Elijah while he rubbed his ear and muttering in annoyance. He got up and walked besides Elijah.
Elijah: “Hey. I’m…gonna run the bathroom. I drink too much juice during lunch. Go get Milena for me, will ya? She was in the music room. Her club meeting must have been over by now.”
He said with a carefree smile, then running off.
Ark: “…Okay.”
Truth is, Elijah and Milena have been going out for months now.
Ark walked into the hallway, then turned right. The door to the music room was right in front of him. As he was just reaching for the knob, he heard a sound from the other room. It was music. Sweet, beautiful music being played on a piano. Ark then peered through the door window and saw Milena playing the piano. It was most likely music by Chopin. Just then, the rain outside stopped, the clouds cleared, and the sun started shooting off rays of light right into the classroom. The light hit Milena from behind, as if she was the cause of the rain suddenly stopping. Her hair seemed to shine in the sunlight as she played the piano. Ark has never seen such beauty in a while.
He then stood by the door closed; he pressed his back against it. He just stood there listening to the music being played by Milena. After all, she was extremely talented in music. The music stopped, although Ark didn’t notice as he was still in a state of trance because of what he just witnessed. Suddenly, the door behind opened, making Ark fall on his back.
Ark: “AHH!! Ow…”
Milena: “Ark?”
Ark who had just fallen on his back, looked up at her eyes.
Ark: “…Yo.”
Milena: “Were you listening…?”
Ark then slowly got up, grabbing the back of his head in pain. Once he was all the way up, he scratched the tip of his nose in a bit of embarrassment.
Ark: “…Yeah. You… play beautifully.”
Her eyes widened in shock. Milena just looked at Ark, in amazement on what he just said.
Ark: “What is it?”
Milena: “Oh…nothing. I didn’t think you were capable of such compliments sometimes.”
Ark stared at Milena, confounded he was. Is that what people thought of him in general?
Ark: “…I’m no emotionless robot, you know…”
He said, while putting his head down in disappointment. When he raised his head, Milena had her arm extended towards him, holding a box on her hands. It had cute pink wrapping, and a bow on top, like her.
Milena: “Here! It’s your 17th birthday today, isn’t it?”
Ark: “How did you…!?”
Milena: “Hehe. Please, do you really think I’d forget?”
Ark: “You had me going, you know.”
Ark smiled a bit, while slowly (and reluctantly) reaching for the box. He carefully started unwrapping it, he didn’t want to damage the wrapping, it looked like she took a while trying to get it to look right. When Ark opened the box, there was a silver necklace. The symbol was an Ark, a big ship. Ark chuckled a bit when he saw it.
Ark: “Man…I have enough people teasing me about my unusual name already. This will just provoke them…”
Milena giggled at his reaction.
Milena: “Oh, you know you like it! Don’t lie!”
She said like pointing at his nose.
Ark: “Okay! Okay!…Thanks.”
He couldn’t hide a smile.
Milena: “Plus, your parents must have given you that name for a reason, right?”
Ark: “…”
He fell silent. There was something wrong, and Milena could sense it. However, she didn’t want to bother him. It was his big day after all.
Milena: “…Let me put it on for you.”
Ark: “Oh, you don’t have t- -Gah!”
Ark was grabbed by his shoulders and forced to turn around. Milena was surprisingly strong, despite her size and innocent appearance. The room was filled with silence; the sunlight was fading as it was nearing nighttime. They were in the classroom for a long time. Milena struggled a bit trying to put on Ark’s necklace around his neck. It only made the moment even more awkward for Ark. Finally; she was able to get it on him.
Milena: “Aha! It looks good on you!”
Ark: “…Hrrrm…I guess.”
They both just gazed at each other. After a few seconds, the door suddenly opens, and Elijah walks in. Both Ark and Milena took a step away from each other before Elijah could see.
Elijah: “Hello! Sorry, teacher wanted to speak with me about my assignment. I swear! They expect too much from us these days…”
Elijah looked at both Ark and Milena. Seeing as they weren’t talking, and acting awkwardly. But he decided not to press on the subject; he just acted the same carefree way he always did. He walked over to Milena and put his arm around her, giving her a peck on the lips.
Ark looked away slightly, truthfully, he always had feelings for her. But he always had trouble expressing emotions…so why bother?
Ark: “…I gotta go.”
Milena didn’t say anything.
Elijah: “Hm? Karate practice today again?”
Ark: “Yeah. And I’m late like always. Sorry, see you guys later.”
Ark begins running for the door, but then Elijah calls his name.
Elijah: “Hey Ark!”
Ark: “Hm?”
Elijah then throws a book at Ark.
Elijah: “Happy birthday, buddy.”
Ark takes a look at the title of the book.
Ark: “‘How to score with chicks’ …Are you serious!?”
Elijah: “Come on! 17 years, and still no girlfriend! I gotta help you out, buddy!”
Milena giggles at the whole conversation while Ark shakes his head and sighs in annoyance.
Ark: “…Thanks…I guess.”
Ark then runs out of the room, smiling a bit. It felt…nice to have people that remembered his birthday. Of course, it was another normal day for Ark, but a bit of attention never hurt him.
Ark: “I’m late…I’m late…I’m late…”
He kept saying to himself as he ran out of the school, and into the street. He ran as fast as he could, he was surprisingly fast. Trying so hard not to bump into people. His necklace dangled from left to right, it bothered him a bit. However, it was a special gift, so he would never take it off, unless it was necessary.
Ark finally got to his destination. ‘Grand Dojo’ the sign read. It was a pretty small place, in such a huge city. The walls and roof were made of wood as if ‘preserving’ old ways. Not to mention the building stuck out like a sore thumb in the middle of the city. It was very strange yet fascinating.
When he got inside, a shout emerged from across the room.
: “YER LATE!”
Ark stopped in his tracks. Knowing whom the person was, he shook his head.
Ark: “Come on, Ray. You should be used to it by now.”
Ray: “Oh, you never let me have my fun.”
Ark’s karate master name’s Ray. He’s a pretty funny person, and is usually the first one to lighten up the mood in a situation. He looks around his mid 30’s, but he was never revealed his age to Ark. Very dark hair, his eyes are also close to being dark. He was wearing his karate uniform. Which was all black, including his belt.
In fact, Ray’s only student during the time was Ark. The dojo was only made 3 months ago. However, Ark had made such unbelievable progress, he was already a brown belt. Today was another day of practice. Ark had changed into his uniform before hand; it was white counter-part of Ray’s uniform. Hour after hour, they spent practicing old moves, and learning new moves. For some reason, Ark refused to advance to a black belt.
Ray: “So when exactly are you going to take your black belt? With your talent, you could be a national champion! No need for you to hang around here.”
Ark then just got up and started walking towards the door.
Ark: “When are you going to stop telling me that? I don’t want to.”
Ray: “Why exactly?”
Ark: “Because I don’t.”
Ray sighed as a way of saying he gives up.
Ray: “Yeah, Yeah. It’s always the same with you, boy.”
Ark: “Don’t call me boy, old man.”
Ray: “Sheesh! You’re always so sulky. Anyway, practice is over…And Happy Birthday.”
Ark: “…Oh…Thanks.”
Ark said a bit surprised. He didn’t remember telling Ray when his birthday was. But he didn’t bother thinking about it, at least for now. The time was 8 PM. When Ark got out of the dojo and into the street, the moon shined as bright red as ever.
This was just another typical night in this world. However, during the past few months, the moon had been getting a bit brighter as the time went by.
Ark: “Hmm…another bright moon day. Creepy.”
Ark said as he started at the moon, other people just passed by besides him, not paying any attention.
In the dojo…
Ray: “…Alright, you can come out now.”
Ray said, as a bright puff of black smoke centered in the room. It rose until it hit the ceiling; there was a human like figure inside the smoke. However, only bright blue eyes could be seen through.
: “…Is the boy ready yet?”
It was a female voice.
Ray: “…Not quite yet. Maybe you can give him a push.”
: “We don’t have much time. I guess I can use THAT form.”
Something unusual was brewing somewhere. And Ark would soon be in the middle of it. What awaited the young soul? And why? There were still many revelations to be uncovered. And this was only the beginning.
