Makoto Sanada is a secluded old man who lives quite by himself near the outskirts of Tokyo. Labeled a "Grandmaster of Karate", he takes on very few students; he tempers the skills and talents of those he considers the most serious about pursuing karate. Many of his students have gone on to win championships. Even Makoto, in his advanced age, has been an undefeated champion to all challengers.

However, Makoto is more famous then one might first believe. Once, long ago, he was among those considered a "Hero" in online game "The World: Version R:2", none other the Slade of the Azure Stars. Trapped in The World, he experienced many trials and unique adventures, made many friends and enemies, and gained much fame. After R:2, he settled down in R:3 as a Game Master, where he has been seen as an icon among players. The other Game Masters considered him a Maverick, but he did his job in hunting hackers and anomalies of the game.

Now, in R:X, he has retired as a game master. To honor his services and deeds during the Net Crisis of R:2, the makers of The World funded his dojo, and allowed him to keep Slade as a character. However, he has had the yearning to play the game as a normal player, tired of all the fame and attention he received. Thus, Gouken (Strong Fist) was made.
