After the incident with Rashiki Yojimbo, Mai's guardian, put her in Kawaru's care. Since then she has been raised by Kawaru and Crystallia like a daughter. Having grown up in the strange atmosphere or her two adopted parents Mai has adopted a unique outlook at life as well as an awareness of the supernatural.
Mai is grateful to Kawaru and Crystallia for looking after her, but since she lacks a blood tie to them at times believes herself to simply be a burden and as such feels a strong sense of obligation towards them. Mai feels a strong sense of responsibility towards their real daughter and her younger sister and emulates Kawaru's zelous protection for Crystallia for their daughter.
Overall Mai has a fairly modest personality but is a sweet person who enjoys helping others. She holds strong to her beliefs, and her need to protect her younger sister have driven her to increasing her physical prowess. She also learned how to fight.
