[/b][/i][/center]~ Episode 5: Watarimono (Wanderer) ~[/u]
Act 1: Mischievous New Friend
“I’m leavin’ now, mom!”
As she leaves her home in Nishi-ku (West Ward), Sapporo, green-haired gal from Osaka Chiaki Fuyutsuki is heard shouting this with a wide smile on her face, as she does every school morning. With her school bag in hand and a spring in her step, Chiaki skips lively along the sidewalk towards the train station. She was particularly energetic today. “Haha! I dunno why, but I’m real happy this mornin’! This is gonna be a great day for sure!” A short time later, the giddy Chiaki would be just a block away from Kotoni Station. “There it is!” Chiaki was just about to break into a jog, when suddenly…
“Nya…” …a tiny sound as soft as a mouse’s squeak catches her attention.
“Huh?” Stopping in her tracks, Chiaki looks to the rear of her to discern the origin of the sound. “What was that?” After hearing the sound several more times, Chiaki determined it to be a cat’s mewl. “…A cat? …But where’s it comin’ from?”
“Nyaa…”
“…!” Looking a short distance up, Chiaki locates the source of the sound and finds a stray kitten perched precariously on a tree branch. “Oh! A Japanese bobtail!”
“Nyaa…” The little feline was clearly in much fear.
Her pro-animal nature getting the better of her, Chiaki sets her school bag down onto the concrete and takes it upon herself to help the kitten. “Don’t worry, little guy! I’ll help ya down!”, Chiaki says in an attempt to ease the stray’s anxiety. She begins to climb the tree until she was level with the stray cat’s altitude. Once she is so, she extends her hand out towards it. “C’mon, little guy, let’s get ya off o’ this scary tree…”
A little frightened by Chiaki’s presence, the small feline backs away.
“Don’t worry, I won’t hurt ya…”
“…Nyaa…” Realizing that Chiaki was simply extending her services, the cat slowly but cautiously approaches her.
“Yeah, that’s it… A little more…”
…Several moments of tension later, Chiaki successfully brings the cat back to the ground and even feeds it a small portion of her lunch. Watching the kitten eat straight from her hand, Chiaki was overcome. “Kawaii!!!”, she gushes. Picking up her school bag, Chiaki bids farewell to the cute stray. “See ya later, little guy! And be sure to stay outta them trees, ‘kay? Hee-hee!” With that, Chiaki turns around and pick ups her trek towards the train station.
However… “Nya…!”
“Hmm?” Turning to her rear once more, Chiaki discovers the kitten she had rescued was following her. “What are you…? H-Hey! Go on, little guy! You can’t follow me to school!”
Whether the kitten couldn’t understand Chiaki’s words or just wasn’t listening, it simply lets out a meager “Nyaa…” with widened eyes.
“…Ohhh…” The green-haired Osakan just didn’t have it in her to turn the stray away. She picks up the kitten and begins to cradle it in her arms. “How can I say no to a face like that?” And before Chiaki realized what she was doing, she was bringing the kitten to school with her.
…A short while later, Chiaki walks through the crowd of students gathered in the school courtyard and stops in front of the entrance to the school, all the while hiding the kitten from the public. The fact that she had brought a stray cat to school with her had finally hit home. With her back turned to the crowd, Chiaki addresses the cat in her hands. “Okay, kitty, listen up. If you wanna come with me, you gotta be real quiet. Got that?”
“…Nya?”
“…Oh, you are just too cute!”
Just then… “Oi, Chiaki!”, an approaching voice calls out from behind.
“!!!” Recognizing the voice as Emiri’s, Chiaki hastily places the kitten inside her bag and turns to face her redhead friend with the bag behind her back. “H-Hey, Emi-chan! What’s up?”
“…Hmm? You okay, Chiaki? You’re sweating bullets.”
“Huh? O-Oh! I’m fine! I was just…in a hurry to get here, that’s all. Hehehe…”
“…Then why are you still standing out here?”
“I was just about to head inside, alright!?”
“Okay, okay! Jeez… If you didn’t feel like talking, you could’ve just said so…”, Emiri mutters to herself as he walks through the school doors.
“W-Wait, Emiri, I didn’t mean…! …Aw, man…”
Unfortunately, this wouldn’t be the only bullet Chiaki would have to dodge. Later on, during class, Kozue-sensei writes several algebraic equations on the chalkboard. The class keeps silent as they copy these equations into their notebooks. Even Kyosuke, who would normally just gaze out the window to his left, was taking notes as well. But a strange meow-like sound originating from his right would disrupt his writing flow. ‘Huh?’ Kyosuke takes a short look around the classroom, but nothing was out of the ordinary. ‘Hmm…’ Putting the sound out of mind, Kyosuke goes back to writing. But it wouldn’t be long before he hears the sound a second time, as well as a third. At this point in time, curiosity begins to stir among most of the class. ‘Where is that sound coming from…?’
“Pssst! Kyosuke!”, Emiri whispers from behind Kyosuke. “Did you hear that too?”
“Yeah… What about you, Chiaki?”
Just like earlier that morning, Chiaki was sweating profusely. “I didn’t hear anything.”, she whispers, desperately trying to hide her secret. “Maybe you just imagined it.”
“Hey!”, Kozue-sensei calls out from the front of the room, having heard the trio’s quieted voices. “No talking, you three! This is gonna be on your next test, so I suggest you pay attention!”
With their heads lowered, the murmuring trio timidly replies, “Yes, Kozue-sensei…”
“Hmph!” Satisfied with her disciplinary statement, Kozue-sensei turns back around and continues to write on the chalkboard. Just then, the strange meow-like sound from earlier makes itself known once more, now loud enough for even Kozue-sensei to hear. “…” Turning to face the class, Kozue-sensei raises an eyebrow. “Is there a…cat…in here?”
“T-That was me, sensei!”, Chiaki suddenly spouts with her hand raised. “I was practicing my cat sounds! Hehehe…!”
The entire class begins to give the eccentric girl strange looks. “…That’s, um…nice, Chiaki, but…practice on your own time if you don’t mind…”
“Gotcha, sensei. Gomen. Hehehe…hah…” The embarrassed girl would bury her face in her notebook for the rest of the period.
…Later that morning, during P.E., Chiaki kneels in front of her locker in the girls’ locker room. She opens up her school bag and out pops the head of her new feline friend. “You’re gettin’ to be a handful, little fella… Now just stay in my locker until I get back, ‘kay? Here, you can have some more o’ my lunch if you get hungry.”
“Nya.”, the kitten cutely responds.
“I promise I won’t be long, alright? Now be a good kitty and stay put.” Having said her part, Chiaki closes the locker door, picks up her towel, and runs outside.
With the loud sounding of her whistle, Chiaki’s P.E. teacher and swimming coach, Naru Fukuda, signals the start of the class. “Alright!”, Fukuda-sensei shouts as she addresses the class. “We’ll start today off with some laps! Akiba, Fuyutsuki, Hizuno, Nakahara, Takino, you’re up first!”
“Yes, Fukuda-sensei!” The five girls Fukuda-sensei had beckoned all walk over and take their places at the edge of the diving boards.
“Ganbatte, Chiaki-chan!”, Risa Hizuno, one of Chiaki’s closest friends in the class, says to her from the next diving board over.
“You too, Risa-chan!”, Chiaki replies with a wide smile. After a couple of deep breaths, she bends down, touches her toes with her fingertips, and gazes at her reflection in the water, awaiting Fukuda-sensei’s signal.
Fukuda-sensei places her whistle by her mouth and calls out, “Ready! Set!” In place of the third word “go”, she blows into her whistle. In response to this, the five girls leap off of the diving boards and into the water in sync.
As expected from the star of the school swim team, Chiaki was ahead of the pack in mere seconds, gaining her cheers and shouts of moral support from the rest of the class. Chiaki swims up and down the center of the pool twice in rapid repetition. As soon as she taps the west side of the pool with her hand…
…Fukuda-sensei clicks a button on her stopwatch. “31 seconds! That’s your best time yet, Chiaki!”
“Yatta!”, Chiaki exclaims in victory. Despite several hardships along the way, this was indeed turning out to be a great day for the Osakan gal…
…If only for a little while. As the class cheers for Chiaki outside, a different type of party was going on indoors. Inside Chiaki’s locker, her little kitten finishes licking the interior of her bento. “…Nyaa.” Seeking entertainment, the pint-sized cat shuffles its way out of Chiaki’s bag and begins to scratch its budding claws on the locker door…until it creaks slowly open. “Nya?” Apparently, in her haste, Chiaki had neglected to secure the door closed with a padlock. Its pathway open to it, the cat jumps out of the locker and starts to wander, led only by its inquisitiveness.
Meanwhile, after Fukuda-sensei’s laps session, the entire class frolics in the pool for the remainder of the period. In one corner of the pool, Chiaki is seen conversing with her friends Risa Hizuno, Asuka Takino, and Megumi Ueda. “You never cease to amaze me, Chiaki!”, Megumi starts. “31 seconds? Sugoi desu ne!”
“Heh. Thanks, Megu, but it’s no big deal really.”
“Don’t be so modest, Chiaki!”, Risa interjects. “You’re the fastest swimmer in the whole class AND you’re popular with the guys!”
“Popular? Oh, c’mon now…”
“Hontou da! Every week I have dozens of guys come up to me with love letters and say ‘Could you give this to Chiaki?’! Hah!”
“I know one thing that gets their attention…”, Asuka mutters with a glimmer in her eye. She slinks through the pool water, creeps up behind Chiaki, and begins to fondle her breasts. “It’s these!”
“Aah! A-Asuka, what are you d-doing!?”
“…There she goes again…”, Risa and Megumi groan in unison.
“I’ve seen the way that guys look at you, Chiaki! Practically all of them spend less time looking at your face and more time looking at these babies! Although I can’t say I blame them! Hahahaha!”
“Grrrr…!” Red-faced Chiaki frees herself from Asuka’s grip and plants her in a headlock. “Dammit, Asuka, why do you have to do that every time I drop my guard!?”
“G-Gomen, gomen! I couldn’t help it! Aah! Itai, itai!”
…A short time later, Chiaki walks into the locker room as she dries her hair with her towel. ‘I hope my little kitty friend behaved himself while I was gone.’ Walking up to her locker, Chiaki pulls her towel off of her head. With her eyesight no longer shielded by the cloth, the first thing she notices is the locker’s door hanging wide open. “…Hmm?” Inside the locker were an open school bag, an empty bento, and tiny scraps leftover from Chiaki’s former lunch. “…Oh, no! No, no, no, no, no!” In a frenzied panic, Chiaki kneels down and combs over the interior of the open locker in search of her cat, even dumping the contents of her school bag all over the locker room floor. But to no avail; there was no sign of the kitten other than the crumbs of food it left behind. “…Yabai…”

Act 2: Find That Cat!The beginning of lunch hour. A group of girlfriends walks towards the school cafeteria, happily conversing and laughing together. “Hahaha! Ii desu ne! …Huh?” Looking ahead, one of the girls spots a bundle of black and brown fur retreating behind a corner. “Ah! Did you guys see what I just saw?”
“Hmm? What’d you see?”
“It looked like…a cat!”
“A cat? In the school?”
To confirm her suspicions, the girl runs over and glances around the corner, but the hallway was empty. “…It’s gone.”
Meanwhile, on the school rooftop, Chiaki’s friends eat her out after hearing her tale. Misuzu was perhaps miffed the most about the situation. “You brought a stray cat onto school grounds?!? AND you let it get away?!?”, she roars. “Just what on Earth were you thinking, Chiaki?!?”
“Gomen nasai!”, Chiaki cries with an apologetic bow. “I know what I did was stupid, and you have every right to be angry! It’s just… It’s just…”
“It’s just what, Chiaki?”
“…IT WAS JUST SO CUTE!!!”
“…” If this was Chiaki’s way of apologizing, Kyosuke and the others certainly weren’t impressed.
The hopeless girl claps her hands together and pleads, “Please, you guys, I need your help in findin’ him! I beg ya!”
The others weren’t so quick to reply, however. First to break the silence, Kyosuke says, “Alright, we’ll help…”
“Ya mean it, Kyosuke!?”
“…but on one condition. If a teacher finds it first, you have to take responsibility for bringing it here in the first place. Got it?”
Tears of joy trickle down Chiaki’s cheeks. “Hai!”
Emiri puts her hands on her hips and shines a sly smirk at Kyosuke. “Wow, Kyosuke! I didn’t think you cared! Like a knight in shining armor! Hehehe!”
“W-What’s that supposed to mean!?”, Kyosuke spouts with a flushed face, causing his friends to laugh at his embarrassment. After the laughter dies down, Kyosuke clears his throat and takes charge of the situation. “Alright! Misuzu, you and Yuzu-chan check the first floor! Chiaki, you and Rudy check the second! Emiri and I will search the third floor! If you don’t find anything, rendezvous at the front of the school in 30 minutes!”
“Hai!” Upon receiving their ‘captain’s’ orders, the ‘troops’ quickly take their leave.
Once again, Emiri feels the urge to tease. “Heh. I’ve never seen you take charge like that, Kyo. It was kinda inspiring. You sounded pretty cool just now.”
“…Y-You think so?”
“Mm-hmm. Okay then! Let’s get going, ‘Kyosuke-taichou’!”, Emiri suddenly exclaims with a salute.
…On the first floor, Misuzu and Yuzu’s search would begin in the cafeteria. Keeping a scowl on her face, Misuzu would kneel down and take a meager glance underneath each lunch table. “Unbelievable… A girl of my caliber reduced to hunting a mere animal…”, she gripes.
Though she was close enough to hear Misuzu’s incessant grumbling, Yuzu kept up her usual optimism. “Don’t worry, Misuzu-senpai. I’m sure we won’t be searching for very long. Now let’s see…” As Yuzu was busy searching every crevice in the cafeteria the cat would’ve been small enough to fit into…
…a loud ruckus could be heard in the kitchen. The sounds of crashing plates, clanking pots and pans, and profanities clouded the cafeteria’s airwaves. “WHY, YOU!!!”, a voice angrily shouts, liking belonging to the head chef. The door leading into the kitchen swings violently open, and the head chef is seen flailing his arms about as a little cat with a bobtail makes its speedy escape. “Come back here, you mangy cat! You’re gonna pay for ruining all of my food!”, screams the head chef in fury.
Noticing the fleeing feline, Misuzu and Yuzu give chase. “After it!”, shrieks Misuzu. “Don’t let it get away!”
…Meanwhile, on the second floor, Chiaki searches frantically for her friend, jumping from classroom to classroom in a frenzy. Among her panicked shouts were “Here, kitty, kitty!”, “Where are ya, little guy?”, and “Come out, come out, wherever you are!”
It was all Rudy could do just to keep up with her. “Chiaki!”, he calls over to the frenetic Osakan in a breathless whine. “Could you slow down just a little!?”
“I can’t, Rudy!”, Chiaki calls back in desperation. “I’ve gotta find my kitty friend before somethin’ bad happens to ‘im! What if he’s hurt!? Or worse!?”
Rudy was rather surprised by this display. The way Chiaki was acting towards a kitten she had known for just a few hours was no different than how a mother would act if she had lost her son or daughter. It had inspired him. “…Hmm…” But it had also given him a rather crafty idea. If he was the first to find Chiaki’s kitten, she wouldn’t be able to help but shower him with hugs and kisses. “…Hehehehe… Huh?”
And as luck would have it, the cat in question happens to wander into the second floor hallway that very moment. It makes eye contact with Rudy and lets out a short “Nya”.
“Aha! Found you!”, Rudy exclaims victoriously. “Come to ‘Uncle Rudy’…”, he says to the cat with arms outstretched.
“…Nya!” The cat suddenly begins to scurry in Rudy’s direction…
‘Yes! It’s coming this way!’
…and dashes between his legs and past him, towards the third floor stairway.
“…Nani…?”
At that moment, Misuzu and Yuzu skid onto the second floor and spot the pursued cat just before it falls out of view. “There it goes! After it!”, yells the frenzied Misuzu.
“M-Misuzu!? Yuzu!?”
“CHARGE!!!!!”
“…Uh-oh…” Too focused on catching the kitten, Misuzu and Yuzu fail to notice Rudy standing there…even as they trample him. “…Ow…”
Having been too far to notice or even hear the stampede, Chiaki returns to Rudy’s side. “I don’t think he’s on this floor, Rudy. Maybe we should try somewhere…else? Um… Daijoubu dekka?”
“Oh, yeah… Never better… Hehehe…”
“…Well, it’s not in the astronomy clubroom either…”, Emiri says defeated, closing the clubroom door behind her as she left. “That does it for all the rooms on this floor. Why don’t we check downstairs? Or maybe one of the others found it already?”
“…Or a faculty member…”, Kyosuke suggests forebodingly.
“Let’s just…pray that’s not the case. Hehehe.”
Letting out a sigh of exhaustion, Kyosuke looks towards a nearby clock. “…10 more minutes before we have to meet up with everyone. Let’s take one more look around.”
“Sure.” Kyosuke’s redheaded partner decides to take the lead and walks ahead of him towards the room nearest the stairway. All of a sudden, the door leading down to the second floor opens up just a bit and the pursued kitten scurries out. “Ah!” Emiri spots the animal just in time for it to pounce around her legs. “H-Hey! What are you doing!?” The feline’s speedy movement causes Emiri to jerk her feet about, which eventually makes her lose her balance. “A-Aah!”
“Abunai!”, Kyosuke shouts as he attempts to catch Emiri before she fell. Unfortunately, her sudden stumble had caught him off-guard, and he was ill-prepared to break her fall. The cat flees from the turmoil towards the rooftop…
…while Emiri lay on top of Kyosuke. “K-Kyosuke…!” Emiri’s face turns beet red as she realizes the position she and Kyosuke were in.
Kyosuke’s face was just as warm as hers. “Are you…okay, Emiri?”
“…Y-Yeah, thanks.”
And as if the situation weren’t any more awkward than it already was, the couple would be shortly joined by Misuzu, Chiaki, Rudy, and Yuzu, who were just in time to see where this would lead, if anywhere at all. “…” The four overlooking friends are all struck with the same degree of speechlessness.
“M-Minna!”, Kyosuke shrieks in horror. “It’s…not what you think!”
“…I’ve heard that before…”, Misuzu mutters in revulsion.
“…Kyosuke… Emiri…”, Chiaki murmurs, too shocked to utter anything else.
“My, my, Kyosuke-san…”, Rudy says in a teasing tone. “I didn’t think you had it in you! And with Emi-chan, no less!”
“I TOLD YOU IT’S NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE!!!”
…A short time after the little incident in the third floor hallway, Kyosuke and his friends return to the school’s rooftop, where Chiaki’s kitten was last seen heading. The group spreads out about the roof in search of their target. “Anyone see it?”, Kyosuke calls out to the others.
“Nothing over here!”
“Or here!”
“I don’t see it, senpai!”
“…Wait! There it is!” Misuzu turns everyone’s attention towards the top of the school’s bell tower. Near the base of the bell, Chiaki’s cat is seen walking carefully along the roof’s tiling.
“How’d it get all the way up there!?”
“That doesn’t matter! We’ve gotta get it down before it falls!”
Before Chiaki knew it, her feet were carrying her in the direction of the ladder leading up to the bell tower’s roof. “Don’t worry, kitty! I’ll get you down!”, shouts Chiaki as she starts to climb.
“Be careful, Chiaki!”, her friends shouted from below.
“…Nyaa…” Being high off the ground, the little cat was in as much fear as it was in that fateful morning.
As she reaches the top of the ladder, Chiaki glances down at the ground. “Wow… T-This is…really high up, ain’t it…?” She then focuses on her feline friend, who was just a few short feet away. “H-Hey, little guy… I’m here to help ya…”, Chiaki says in a futile attempt to mask her own fear.
The cat, who picked up on this, backs away a little.
“Hehe… You can tell I’m scared too, can’t ya? Don’t worry… No matter what happens to me, I won’t let anythin’ happen to you… I promise…”
“…Nyaa…” Still quite frightened by the altitude, the cat slowly approaches Chiaki, perhaps seeking her comfort, until it was once again in her arms.
Below, the rest of the group cheers on behalf of Chiaki’s success. “Whoo-hoo! Way to go, Chiaki!”
With the kitten secured in her right arm, Chiaki wipes the sweat from her temple with her left. “Ahhh… That was a close one… What do ya say we get down from here now?”
“Nya!”
“Hee-hee! I thought you’d say somethin’ like that.” Her new friend in hand, Chiaki starts towards the ladder…
…but her prolonged time spent on the tiled roof had loosened some of the tiles one which Chiaki stood. One such tile comes completely loose from under her foot, causing Chiaki to stagger backward, lose her footing on the tower, and plummet towards the ground below.
“CHIAKI!!!”, Kyosuke and the others bellow in fear.
As Chiaki holds her kitten close to her chest, her panicked scream echoes through the air.
“…Gotcha!”
“…H-Huh?” Slowly reopening her eyes, Chiaki finds herself in the arms of her P.E. instructor Naru Fukuda. “F-Fukuda-sensei!?”
Saying nothing, Fukuda-sensei just smiles back at the green-haired girl.
…Soon after Chiaki’s near-death experience, the group comes together at the entrance of the school. “Ah! I’m so glad you’re alright, Chiaki-senpai!”, yelps Yuzu, who was on the verge of tears.
“Hehehe… Thanks, Yuzu-chan. Sorry to worry ya.”
“What were you doing in the school courtyard anyway, Fukuda-sensei?”, Misuzu queries.
“I was cleaning up after my class over by the pool when I saw Chiaki on the tower.”, Fukuda-sensei explains. “It’s a good thing I was nearby too.”
“Yeah! You totally saved me back there, coach!”
“Okay, okay, enough about saving you. What’s the story on this little fella?”
“Huh? Oh… Well, uh…”
The group of close friends spends the next few minutes explaining their situation to Fukuda-sensei -- everything from that morning up until now. “…Hmm… I see. Chiaki, are you aware of the punishment for bringing an animal onto school grounds?”
“…Yes…”
“And are you also aware that you could get suspended from not only school, but also the swim team?”
“…Yes, sensei…”
“Then you accept responsibility?”
“…Completely…”
“…In that case…”
“…”
“…I guess I can overlook it this time.”
After hearing Fukuda-sensei’s words, the group was compelled to blink again. “…Nani?”
“As long as Chiaki understands what she did was wrong and accepts responsibility for it, I don’t see any reason to punish her…”
“…Fukuda-sensei…”
“…Besides, if she’s suspended, then it’s over for my team! Hahaha!”
“…”
Later that afternoon, after the final bell, the entire group departs from the school together. Chiaki’s cat mewls happily in her arms. “Aw! You were right, Chiaki! It is cute!”, Emiri gushes in a fashion similar to her Osakan friend.
“What are you gonna name him?”, Yuzu curiously asks.
“Hmm…” Chiaki holds the cat up and gazes into its eyes as she thinks of a name.
“…Nya…”
“…Maneki! I’ll call you Maneki!”
“Maneki?”, Emiri repeats. “You mean like ‘maneki-neko’?”
“Yeah!”
“I like it, senpai! Maneki!”
“Okay then! Maneki it is! Ha-ha!”
“Hehehe…”
“Nya-nya!”
A short while later, after disembarking from their train, Kyosuke and Emiri are seen exiting Sapporo Station side by side. “Wasn’t that cool of Fukuda-sensei to let Chiaki off the hook?”, asks Emiri with her trademark grin.
“Yeah, I guess… Kind of an anticlimactic ending though, if you ask me…”
“Aw, don’t say that. Today was really exciting. Admit it! You had fun!”
“…A little…”
“…Besides…” Just then, Emiri stops in her tracks…
…as if signaling Kyosuke to do the same. “Hmm? Besides what?”
“…That little incident on the third floor… Wasn’t that funny?”
“…It…wasn’t that funny…”
“…So how’d it feel?”
“H-How’d what feel?”
“What was it like to feel my chest pressed against yours…?”
“!!!” Kyosuke looks towards the setting sun to hide his reddened cheeks. “I d-didn’t feel anything! Quit putting thoughts like that into my head, Emiri!”
“Hahahaha! You’re embarrassed, aren’t you?”
“Cut it out, I said!”
For each time Emiri teased Kyosuke, his face grew a deeper shade of red. This back-and-forth ‘lover’s quarrel’ would persist until the two reached their respective homes.
