EXP & Leveling Up
Throughout the game, you level up by gaining EXP. You gain EXP by defeating monsters (and, at times, other players).
At level 1, you start with an EXP scale of 0/1000, meaning you require 1000 EXP points to get to level 2. When you reach level 2, the scale resets to 0/1000. Then you require 1000 EXP points to get to level 3. Rinse, repeat.
Every time you level up, you gain 15 stat points - 10 of which are used to develop your parameters, and 5 of which are distributed to your parameters automatically (depending on job class).

The amount that your HP and SP increases by per level also depends on your job class. If you're an Assault Ace, the amount that your HP and SP increases by per level depends on your first job class form:

Note: When allocating stat points, they must be distributed among at least 4 stats. Also, the number of points that a single stat rises by per level cannot exceed 5.
EXP Scale
The following is a surefire method to make sure that no one on the site levels up by too much:
At the end of a battle, the enemy gives out a set amount of EXP. This is the "Base EXP", which all party members receive. Afterwards, the levels of the party members compared to the levels of the enemy affect their individual EXP gain. If a character's level is lower than an enemy's, that character receives more EXP. If a character's level is higher than an enemy's, that character receives less EXP.
The following is a guide to EXP gain relative to level:
If the character's level is...
– 5 or more levels higher than the enemy = 1/2 EXP
– 4 levels higher than the enemy = -40% EXP
– 3 levels higher than the enemy = -30% EXP
– 2 levels higher than the enemy = -20% EXP
– 1 level higher than the enemy = -10% EXP
– 1 level lower than the enemy = +10% EXP
– 2 levels lower than the enemy = +20% EXP
– 3 levels lower than the enemy = +30% EXP
– 4 levels lower than the enemy = +40% EXP
– 5 or more levels lower than the enemy = 2x EXP
